Alas!
gaudior
gaudior:
Vash

*He's not saying anything, but he's sneaking glances around the room. Akito's comment about 'they're all killers' is obviously disturbing him a tad. Even considering the source's semi-hysteria, the accusation is not sitting well with him.*

Hatori

"Better, even a little better, would be something amazing...Thank you, Tsuzuki-san."

Soujirou

*with unruffled cheerfulness*

Don't worry, Sohma-san. I think it's better if I don't kill you now, because some people would get upset.

*He doesn't sit down, but he goes to a spot near the wall a short distance away from the crowd, where he can see everyone, and stands there in a relaxed pose.*

Is something wrong, Vash-san?

[When he says Sohma-san here, I think it's clear that he means Akito rather than Hatori.]

Akito

(Never Forget)
*flinches at the sight of Hatori's damaged eye. And at the "san."*

Of-- of course it matters. They'll attack us, that's what people have always done, you know--

Hisoka

(Never Forget)
Shut up.

*He's glaring at Akito, voice cold and biting.*

What's wrong-- you've never been afraid before?

I don't care how out-of-control you feel. So you don't have your own private little kingdom, so you can't tell people what to do-- I don't care. You're trying to make everyone here feel bad so you can feel better, right?

That's pathetic.

*turns back to his seat and his partner.*

He's an idiot, Tsuzuki. A real one. Don't listen to him.

Hatori

(Never Forget)
"Well, then, they'd attack us, maybe. But at least we'd be fighting. Doing something."

"Soujiro-san, please don't kill Akito-sama--now or later. The rest of my family would be very...upset."

Soujirou

*smiling, as usual* Don't worry about that, Hatori-san. Shishio-san didn't say anything about him, and he's not fighting Shishio-san, so it's all right.

Vash

(Never Forget)
*He can't stand it anymore.*

How can you all be so blase about who you should or shouldn't kill? Don't you realize-- that's the one mistake you can never make right, the very worst crime of them all! You never have the right to take a life; not ever. Maybe that's what you're all in here to learn.

*Tsuzuki, who'd been on the verge of replying to Hisoka, shuts his mouth and smiles again, leaning back against the chairleg with every appearance of languor.*

Soujirou

*in his usual soft voice* But if you believe that, maybe you won't survive, Vash-san. In this world, the strong feed on the weak. If you are strong, you survive. If you are weak, you die. It's the law of nature.

Vash

(Never Forget)
But it's not the only law of nature. Just as often, the strong protect the weak. Symbiosis is just as natural as predation, and usually more helpful. You're all humans. You're not supposed to be natural enemies.

And what's weakness, anyway? A ship's engine can be destroyed with a single blow, but if it's left whole it can take you to the ends of the galaxy. And without it, you're dead in space. Hardly a triumph. And you never know who among you will turn out to be an engine. Could be anyone.

Ships are strong . . .

But it isn't like you say, Vash-san. People die every day, and no one protects them. They have to kill each other and make themselves strong, or else they die. Even Himura-san, who talks about protecting people -- he's a manslayer too.

*to Shishio*

So? What does that matter to the people he does protect? One thing doesn't cancel the other out.

No problem -- I could tell whom you meant! Arguing with Shishio is not all that different from arguing with Soujirou, anyway, except that it involves less smiling and more manaical laughter. *grin*

*stands, panting, shaking, drawn in on himself.*

You're doing something now, Hatori. You're doing something you'll regret. Haven't you got enough of those?

Muraki

(Never Forget)
*nods in response to Soujirou's comments* Quite true. In this world, one is either a predator or prey. The vast majority seem to be the latter, in my observance.

*his gaze flickers briefly over Hisoka in a detached sort of way, before lingering on Tsuzuki with what might be considered affectionate pity, before focusing elsewhere*

Soujirou

(Never Forget)
That's true, Muraki-san. And sparing people . . . or protecting people . . . is weakness. To hold back and spare people means you can't fight with your full strength. *looks at Kenshin, who has gotten up and is listening quietly* It's good that you got a new sword, Himura-san. *smiles*

*glares at Muraki, as usual*

*to Soujirou, sharply:* No. Protecting other people makes you fight harder. *looks at Tsuzuki* And two people together are stronger than anyone alone.

Tsuzuki

(Never Forget)
It's true. People will fight harder, more desperately, to save someone they care about than they will for themselves. I've seen it happen a hundred times. Everyone's got it in them somewhere; all you have to do is find the right trigger-- the Pythias to their Damon.

*shrugs* Doesn't even have to be a person. Akito's got his family's safety to fight for. Muraki's got his revenge. And so forth and so on. Remove the trigger, lose the need to fight, and I bet the ability to fight atrophies away to normal.

Sephiroth

(Never Forget)
*Sephiroth shakes his head.* There's a difference between having someone you're trying to protect and having something to fight for. If you've got a person you're trying to protect, then they're a liability in a fight. Their safety becomes your concern, and you have to fight on two fronts, then - to protect them, and to protect yourself.

It's better to leave them behind if it'll possibly get you killed.
