How, might I ask everyone, is violence applicable to our problems?

Integral

It's easy. You see the problem and shoot it down. *shrugs a bit* It always worked for me. At least, for the larger problems...

*Dryly* How interesting. I tend to find that it's that exact attitude that causes most of my problems. People start shooting... usually at me... and once the bullets are flying, everyone loses the capacity to think like a rational creature. It's just so stupid. If violence wasn't always everyone's first reaction to everything, life would be so much better all around.

But face it, Vash - sometimes violence is useful. It tells others that you aren't going to be messed with, which can make life easier.

*Shakes head. Stubbornly- this is too important to him for compromise.*

Easier isn't the same thing as better, though. Sure, it would be easier for me to kill my enemies, but it wouldn't be better. Not for me- more would just keep coming, and they'd be better armed and create more collateral damage before I killed them, too- and not for the people I'd kill. Once they're dead, it's too late for change, too late to make things better.

*Looks a bit haunted.* I promised her I'd never forget that. I can't break that promise now.

Her name was Rem. She was my... I'm not even sure how to describe her. She was like our mother and our big sister and our best friend. She taught me... everything.

*Looks away. Almost inaudible.* She died in the crash, saving as many of the colonists as she could. The crash my brother engineered.

What could I do? He's still my brother, and we were all we had. And I... I kept hoping I could change him. Teach him what Rem taught me, and make him understand it this time.

It's taken a couple of centuries, but I think we've gotten to a point where he can at least try to listen. And we've got the time.

*quietly snorts derisively at Vash's comments* I had a brother, once. Evidently that pretty sentiment didn't mean as much to him when he decided to ruin my family and try to kill me.

A word of advice, Vash-san. You can't change what is already innate. Accept that, and you'll be better off for it.

Vash

(Never Forget)
I. Get. So. Tired of hearing people tell me that.

*He's obviously imitating other people's voices; the speech patterns are not his own.* 'Accept what you are, Vash. Stop pretending, Vash. You're a Plant, not a human, Vash. The world doesn't work like that, Tongari.'

*Back to his own voice again.* Well, there's a hell of a lot of difference between being what I am and being what other people think I ought to be because of it. My brother's destroyed everyone I cared about, one way or another over the centuries, and I've got a million scars to prove that he's tried to destroy me, too. And if I were to let him make me like him, then he'll have won, and that's not going to happen. Why are you letting your brother win?

Because you have too much of an idea what you're talking about. Muraki-'sensei'.

*to Vash, coldly* Saki hasn't won. I *will* make him pay, one way or another, for what he did. All he did was bring out what was already there.

So you're saying that you were born to be a murdering, twisted psychopath? That it was some kind of inescapable genetic destiny? Is that what you believe?

*Deliberately, and not-so-incidentally trying to distract him from Hatori before the Zodiac doctor can get hurt.* Maybe Saki was right to want to kill you. Maybe the Muraki line should have died.

*smiles, while still keeping watch on Hatori out of the corner of his eye* That's correct, Tsuzuki-san. *pauses* Just like you, with your demonic ancestry. We are what we are.

*chuckles darkly* 'Maybes' and 'shoulds' are irrelevant. The fact remains that we are both still here, so perhaps we are better off making the best of it, ne?

Whatever may be our inborn nature, or whatever circumstances may lead us to become, we always have the ability to choose what we are. No one is born evil, that is.

If he got up and tapdanced nude around the room singing 'I don't want to talk about this,' his feelings could not be clearer. But damned if he's going to agree with Muraki.*

*mumbles* Uh-huh.

I think I agree most with Integral. Violence may not be "the answer," but it's a very useful tool for solving problems. Especially the sort that wear pink and tend flowers. *He's smiling like a cat that got into the cream, obviously trying to tempt some sort of reaction out of Cloud.*

Hatori backs a half-step away from Muraki, dropping his hands to his sides. All the muscles in his back and shoulders tense at Tsuzuki's touch, as if he has not experienced a kind touch in a long time and has forgotten how to deal with one. His expression wavers, evens out to something completely neutral.
"Thank you."

He takes another few steps, turns toward Akito. "Yes, Akito-san?"
