Alas!
voidofspace:
Nice to meet you, I am Johann Liebert.

I'm always waiting at the back, always watching. I understand what you are going through; I don't exactly have a happy past myself.

These feelings of sadness, be it caused by the isolation from companionship or family - I understand what it is. I feel for you, and I understand the way you feel.

*laughs* What makes you think you can understand? You have no idea what you're talking about. Fool.

Because all suffering is the same.

Don't think that your suffering is different, or more important than anybody else's - it isn't.

What is there not to understand?

You really think so? Then why are we here when outside, people live their lives laughing, thinking everything is just fine? They're not suffering. Not as much as they could be, anyway.

Ah, pardon me for intruding, but it seems like you've made a couple of logistical errors. First of all, people who are laughing on the outside aren't necessarily just fine. Sometimes people smile and pretend to everybody else that everything IS just fine when on the inside where nobody else can know... it isn't.
And secondly, I don't think that he ever said that everybody suffers the same _amount_. I mean, some people do just have worse lives than others. But when the pain does come, I thought he was saying, it's the same for everyone. Some just get it more often than others. Maybe people only get as much as they're strong enough to handle.

Or maybe people get as much as the world throws at them. The world, or their family, or God... whoever it is, I don't think they care at all whether it can be handled or not. What on earth makes you think they do?

In my job, you see, I meet a lot of people. And there certainly are some who can't cope with pain. Even if it's natural. Even if it's deserved. *Inexplicably clutches right wrist in left hand, continues speaking.* And then I meet people who refuse to give in, ever, under far worse circumstances, when they're completely innocent of any wrongdoing. And there are a lot more of the strong ones than the weak ones. They take anything that gets thrown at them. They beat the pain, even when death wins.
Maybe you're right. Maybe we don't get as much as we have strength to handle, but... most of us have the strength to handle whatever we get. A subtle difference at best. Chicken and egg. Mmmm. Oyakodon...

*face spasming, then going very still.*

(Voice low, lilting, almost musical) So you say there's something wrong, then, with people who can't handle it?

No. That would be hypocritical. And untrue.
